Background

There is a community perception that the demographic, growth and infrastructure assumptions supporting the NT Planning Scheme Land Use Framework for the future growth of Katherine are being superseded and that a review of the framework is required.

Of particular concern in the community is the functionality of the central commercial area with respect to difficulties experienced by residents in gaining access to commercial and community facilities during and immediately after flood events.

Also of concern is the perceived demand for rural living lots and the need to consider the implications of such development within the context of current water allocation planning.

The current Land Use Framework caters for a population threshold framework of 20 000 people through urban infill and subdivision at Katherine East.

Is there a need to amend the Land Use Framework?

What are the current issues, concerns and imperatives that need to be considered?

The forum will provide the opportunity for:

  • Stakeholders to develop an understanding of the constraints and opportunities influencing future land use in Katherine;
  • Discussion and feedback on issues relating to the functionality of the commercial area particularly in times of flood; and
  • The NT Government to canvass what the community and industry regard as issues relevant to future use and development in Katherine.
